Helping Your Trees Withstand Winter Frost

Updated: Feb 10, 2023

Battling with winter frost?

Worry no more, cause we will help you become more than just prepare before freezing begins.

Winter frost is inevitable however there are determining ways to minimize freeze damage to our plants. Preparation has a lot to say about this matter.

We might forget our plants outside while we toss ourselves on fire inside. This may sound brutal to our plants. Our trees need extra care also, especially in the freezing season.

During winter when the temperature drops quickly our plants go dormant to protect themselves from the freezing temperature. This causes trees to change their energy from blossoming and producing new growth into hardening their tissues.

Oh. Sounds like a lot of self-care. So as tree owners we need to exert love to our plants too in a way of preparing them for the harsh weather.

Here’s how?

Before winter frost strikes take this preventive step on preparing your trees. Don’t know how exactly to do so? Well, take a look at this as follows:

WATER your trees before freezing hits. Hydrating your plants enables them to withstand the freezing atmosphere during winter. And that’s because water acts as an insulator that makes our tree stronger and able to resist extreme damage.

Water serves as the starter pack for our trees. Let's give our trees a good drink before their battle begins.

PRUNE before the battle begins make sure that your trees have a leg up to face the chilliest of the season. Of course, the basics is you have to remove dead and dry leaves, branches, and limbs of the tree. Make sure that is well cleared up so that it will promote safety to everyone too.

Unattended damage will cause much damage, that is why prevention is better than cure as they say. The benefit of pruning also is to promote enhancement to its formation aside from removing its dead branches. We prune to preserve, to beautify and to protect.

MULCH when I say mulch, it is not just adding a layer of material to the soil to add decorative value. Mulching is a way of preparing your trees to withstand the chilliest climate as this performs as sunblock. And mulching helps retain soil moisture enabling it to survive.

Mulch is something special to a tree as the temperature fluctuates in winter. A sudden decrease in temperature can cause much harm to trees. And so, a gradual decrease in temperature helps the plant to withstand the frost.

To do the mulch, you have to assemble the material into a donut-like shape around the tree instead of making it a volcano shape. It allows the tree to breathe. This is why mulching is very important for the plant to survive just like wrapping.

WRAP it's important to wrap your trees to avoid sunscald during winter. As I mentioned above as the temperature fluctuates this can cause much damage to your trees. So, wrapping the trunk helps the tree to remain in the dormant state even with the warm winter sunshine on it.

FOCUS we must give extra care to our younger trees. Just like babies need milk instead of solid food and so do the young trees. As babies need tender love and care and so do the young trees. Young trees are more vulnerable to injury and less likely to survive than old trees.

This is why young trees demand more care. And please be generous to give that care!

As the season progresses you will notice ice buildup on tree trunks and branches. Do not force it to remove it, instead use warm water connected to your water hose to melt the ice buildup.

With the care you give to your trees it will come out smelling victory when winter frost ends. And if you're struggling with the preparation then give us a call!
